Spring at Last
Happy New Year to celebrants of Narooz! Happy Spring to everyone! Bikes are appearing on the road like masses of tulips, all bright and revving with energy after being dormant all winter. I've never had a good answer for the question, "Why do you ride?" until today. I ride because it is the only way I can mindful at speed and stop thinking. I can be mindful and stop thinking in yoga too, but yoga doesn't meet the need for speed.
The preparations for the trans-Canada ride proceed - the tent that hasn't been used for two years is now clean and airing out, the hole in the tent floor is mended, the seams are resealed. The camping food will need restocking. It is very hard to find gluten-free, casein-free, soy-free camping food. I am going to turn into a squirrel this trip, nuts, seeds and fruit.

Do residents of San Francisco really wait until the vernal equinox to dust off their bikes? With the mild climate, I thought bikers there would be active year round. By the way, here on Vancouver Island, we get early spring in February; how does that compare with California?

There certainly is something special about being on a fast moving machine, focused, alert--yet mentally and physically relaxed and feeling free of the world's (and personal) woes.
Hope your trip is a memorable one in all the ways that matter.
